Hosted by IAAS Bangladesh IUBAT
July 24, 2025 Bangladesh National Herbarium, Mirpur, Dhaka

IAAS Bangladesh IUBAT organized an educational visit, seminar, and workshop in collaboration with the Bangladesh National Herbarium under the Ratnavandar Project, with a special focus on the development of the Weed Herbarium segment. The program aimed to enhance participants’ knowledge and practical skills in herbarium science, plant taxonomy, and biodiversity conservation.

The event commenced with an informative seminar conducted by Sardar Nasir Uddin, Chief Scientific Officer of the Bangladesh National Herbarium. During the session, he provided valuable insights into the principles, significance, and applications of herbarium science in botanical research, plant identification, and biodiversity documentation.

Following the seminar, participants attended a technical workshop on herbarium sheet preparation facilitated by Dr. Mahbuba Sultana, Senior Scientific Officer of the Bangladesh National Herbarium. The workshop offered hands-on training in the scientific collection, preservation, mounting, and documentation of plant specimens, enabling participants to gain practical experience in standard herbarium techniques.

As part of the educational visit, participants explored the Herbarium Museum, which houses more than 25,000 preserved plant specimens representing the rich floral diversity of Bangladesh. The guided tour was conducted by Syeda Shahrina Hasin, Scientific Officer, who provided detailed explanations regarding specimen collection, classification, conservation, and the role of herbarium resources in scientific research and environmental management.

The program successfully combined academic learning with practical exposure, fostering a deeper understanding of plant biodiversity, conservation strategies, and herbarium management. It also strengthened collaboration between IAAS Bangladesh IUBAT and the Bangladesh National Herbarium while contributing to the objectives of the Ratnavandar Project.
